Selection Criteria
* Relevant qualifications and professional expertise, with demonstrated knowledge and practical application of occupational therapy principles to support students with diverse learning and wellbeing needs. Proven ability to support the development of fine and gross motor skills, emotional regulation, sensory processing, and functional independence to enable access to learning and participation in school routines.
* Demonstrated capacity to design and deliver targeted individual and small group interventions that support student engagement, self regulation, social skills, and functional routines. Proven ability to identify and address barriers to participation through environmental modifications, adaptive equipment, and evidence based classroom strategies that support inclusion, mobility, positioning, sensory needs, and engagement in learning.
* Proven ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary Student Wellbeing Team, contributing to case management and coordinated responses for students requiring additional support. Demonstrated capacity to liaise collaboratively with teachers, education support staff, families, Student Support Services, and external professionals to support consistency and continuity of care.
* Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage positively and professionally with students, staff, families, and external stakeholders. Demonstrated understanding of confidentiality, child safety, and mandatory reporting responsibilities, and the ability to provide informed advice and consultation to staff regarding students with additional needs.
* Demonstrated organisational and professional practice skills, including the ability to manage workload effectively, maintain accurate and comprehensive case notes, and contribute to student profiles and wellbeing documentation. Commitment to ongoing professional development, reflective practice, participation in wellbeing meetings, and adherence to DE policies, school procedures, and established protocols.
Role
The position of Occupational Therapist has a focus on:
1. Improving fine motor skills and gross motor skills for students to allow them to access learning.
2. Developing strategies to help students maintain focus and manage emotional regulation.
3. Teaching routines for students to manage everyday tasks.
4. Providing professional development on child development, mobility, positioning, or adaptive equipment to ensure consistent support.
Responsibilities
As well as performing the responsibilities required within this ES range, the Occupational Therapist at Altona Green Primary will work in collaboration with the broader wellbeing team.
* Provide high quality case management and support to students.
* Undertake individual and/or group counselling and therapeutic interventions with students to assist them in enhancing their capacity to self-manage their social, emotional, and educational needs.
* Keep thorough and extensive case notes to create transparency and accountability.
* Where appropriate, contribute to whole school, year level and small group programs.
* Develop and implement DE and school procedures and policies to support and foster the wellbeing of students.
* Establish and maintain links with Student Support Services, school networks and relevant support agencies with a view to optimising service provision to students.
* Provide advice in the identification and analysis of emerging student wellbeing issues and coordinate specialist advice on the range of appropriate interventions for school staff to use in classrooms.
* Actively participate in professional development activities and programs and share knowledge and expertise with other staff.
* Work with students with a range of needs, including autism, developmental delays, and physical challenges, to facilitate full participation in the school environment and accessing learning.
