VL & TT Tran (T.T TRAN & V.L TRAN & VL TRAN FAMILY) is a long-established family farming business based in Geraldton, Western Australia. The business specialises in large-scale vegetable cultivation and greenhouse production, supplying major supermarket chains, wholesale distributors, restaurants, and Asian grocery markets across Western Australia and export markets. The business manages a diversified agricultural operation across open-field farming and greenhouse facilities, producing a broad range of crops including potatoes, sweet potatoes, leafy Asian vegetables, herbs, specialty Asian crops, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and capsicums.
With continued growth in production scale, infrastructure investment, and market demand, the business is focused on strengthening operational systems, improving efficiency, and supporting long-term commercial sustainability.
Position Objective: The Irrigation Technician is responsible for supporting the efficient operation, maintenance, monitoring, and optimisation of irrigation infrastructure across the business's open-field farming and greenhouse production facilities. The position ensures crops receive appropriate water delivery through well-maintained irrigation systems, contributing to crop health, production efficiency, water conservation, and sustainable agricultural outcomes. Working closely with management and farm personnel, the Irrigation Technician plays a key role in supporting the business's large-scale vegetable production operations through effective irrigation planning, monitoring, troubleshooting, and system improvements.
Key Responsibilities
* Install, maintain, inspect, and repair irrigation systems including pumps, pipelines, valves, filters, drip irrigation systems, sprinklers, and automated irrigation equipment across farming and greenhouse operations
* Monitor irrigation performance, water pressure, flow rates, and equipment functionality to identify faults, leaks, blockages, or inefficiencies and undertake corrective action
* Operate and maintain automated irrigation control systems, timers, sensors, and monitoring equipment to ensure efficient and reliable water delivery
* Assess crop water requirements, soil moisture levels, weather conditions, and production schedules to assist in determining irrigation timing and application rates
* Conduct routine testing, calibration, cleaning, and servicing of irrigation infrastructure and associated equipment to minimise downtime and maintain operational efficiency
* Assist with water management initiatives by monitoring water usage, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, and supporting sustainable irrigation practices
* Coordinate seasonal irrigation system adjustments to accommodate changing crop requirements, production cycles, and environmental conditions
* Maintain accurate records relating to irrigation schedules, maintenance activities, repairs, equipment performance, water usage, and system inspections
* Collaborate with farm management and operational staff to identify irrigation improvements that support productivity, crop quality, and resource efficiency
* Ensure irrigation activities are carried out in accordance with workplace health and safety requirements, environmental obligations, and business procedures
Assessment Criteria – Qualification, Work Experience and Skills
* A qualification in a relevant field or at least 3 years of relevant work experience in irrigation system installation, maintenance, and operation
* Demonstrated experience working with irrigation systems including drip irrigation, sprinklers, pumps, filtration systems, pipelines, valves, and automated irrigation controls
* Ability to inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair irrigation equipment and associated infrastructure
* Knowledge of irrigation scheduling principles, soil moisture monitoring, water management practices, and efficient water use techniques
* Experience using irrigation monitoring equipment, control systems, sensors, or automated irrigation technologies
* Ability to interpret technical information, maintenance schedules, and operational procedures relating to irrigation systems
* Strong organisational and record-keeping skills with the ability to maintain accurate operational and maintenance documentation
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a commercial agricultural environment
* Commitment to workplace health and safety, environmental compliance, and sustainable farming practices
* Good communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with management, contractors, and operational staff
