is seeking a
Senior Linux Engineer
for a federal government department with offices in the
ACT.
The role is primarily a technical hands-on role, with responsibility to conduct capability development, as well as design, build, maintenance and configuration control tasks. The Senior Linux Engineer will support the maintenance and secure operation of the data centre, supporting the validation and verification of emerging technologies.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
* Administer and maintain Linux-based servers, infrastructure and software across both physical and virtual environments.
* Ensure high availability, fault tolerance, and optimal performance of critical systems.
* Design, build and implement security and network management.
* Close collaboration with engineering, DevSecOps and Environment teams to securely deploy and maintain experimental systems; contribute towards future architectural decisions.
* Provide technical support to department exercises for role specific technologies and systems.
* Conduct regular system audits, perform vulnerability assessments, and manage patching activities.
* Manage SELinux policies, configuring firewalls (iptables/nftables), and enforce secure access controls, including compliance to the Information Security manual (ISM).
* Support accreditation processes and maintain comprehensive compliance documentation.
* Deploy, maintain and manage large Linux Environment Management tools such as Satellite and Ansible for large scale Linux fleet management.
* The role includes developing and maintaining automation scripts using Bash, Python, and Ansible to streamline operations.
* Maintain version-controlled infrastructure-as-code repositories ensuring traceability and supports continuous improvement in system management practices.
Qualifications & Experience:
* Extensive experience with Linux system administration in secure, mission-critical environments, primarily with Red Hat based operating systems.
* Strong knowledge of networking, storage, and virtualisation (KVM, VMware).
* Poven ability to implement security controls and respond to cyber threats.
* Familiarity with integrating emerging technologies into secure infrastructure.
* RHICE (Red Hat Certified Engineer) - Security+, CISSP, or equivalent security certification.
* TIL Foundation (for service management).
* AWS/Azure/GCP certifications (for hybrid cloud environments).
