* One (1) SCL1 Veterinary Officer (Field) Intern
* One (1) SCL2 Veterinary Officer (Field) Intern
These positions are located in Albany, Northam or Narrogin and are available for two (2) years. Other eligible locations across WA may also be considered.
Join DPIRD's Veterinary Officer Internship Program – a new initiative supported by recent bio‐security funding. The program is suitable for early‐career vets or experienced production animal vets seeking a change. It offers a collaborative environment with flexible working arrangements, a full‐time position but without on‐call duties.
Program Overview
The two‐year internship combines hands‐on field work and office‐based projects. You will apply your tertiary veterinary knowledge to safeguard bio‐security and market access. Working closely with experienced officers, you will contribute to surveillance, regulation, and emergency preparedness for WA's livestock and aquatic industries. You will also research, advise on policy, and assist in developing animal health plans.
Responsibilities
* Conduct on‐field surveillance of livestock and aquatic populations to monitor disease.
* Investigate disease at individual and herd/flock level.
* Assist in emergency preparedness planning for animal disease outbreaks.
* Research biosecurity issues and advise on policy development.
* Help develop animal health plans for the state.
* Participate in project work from the office side.
Qualifications
* Passion for animal bio‐security.
* Degree in Veterinary Science from an Australian university or recognised equivalent, and current recognised registration (or ability to obtain before commencement) with the Veterinary Practice Board of Western Australia.
* Knowledge and experience in production animal medicine, including how to investigate disease at an individual and herd/flock level.
* A 'C' class driver's licence currently valid in Western Australia and willingness to travel.
