Description
Nexl is the fast-growing LegalTech company on an ambitious mission to elevate the business of law.
We build an AI-driven CRM and growth intelligence platform that brings a firm's internal and external data together so lawyers, marketing, and business development can collaborate, spot opportunities, and grow revenue.
Recognised by the Financial Times, Deloitte, and the Australian Financial Review as one of the fastest-growing businesses, Nexl is trusted by 150+ firms globally.
We've recently closed a $23 million Series B led by Tidemark Capital, accelerating our mission to transform how law firms grow by uniting lawyers, marketing, and business development into a single growth engine.
The Opportunity
We're scaling our Product & Engineering organisation and expanding our Sydney hub, and we're looking for a Senior Software Engineer with strong backend depth in Ruby on Rails who wants to build, ship, and shape a global SaaS product used and loved by leading law firms around the world.
If you naturally think in systems, data flows, and backend architecture, this role will be a great fit. While your strength is in Ruby on Rails, you'll work across the full stack (including React/TypeScript when needed) to ship end-to-end features as part of a collaborative, cross-functional squad. You'll help evolve the reliability, performance, and scalability of our platform as we grow.
We're looking for engineers who bring strong technical foundations, clear thinking, and a high level of ownership — people who raise the bar, embrace AI in their workflow, and enjoy taking complex problems from idea → architecture → delivered impact.
Requirements
Must haves:
* Strong experience building backend systems in Ruby on Rails
* Deep understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred)
* Experience scaling backend systems in production
* Comfort working full-stack (React/TypeScript exposure)
* Ability to independently design and deliver complex solutions
* Strong understanding of reliability, APIs, and performance
* Strong debugging and observability awareness
* Ability to operate autonomously and drive outcomes
* Strong technical communication and collaboration
* Understanding of security best practices (auth, permissions, data protection)
* Growth mindset + desire to continually raise the bar
* Fluency using AI tools in your engineering workflow
Nice to haves:
* Experience in multi-tenant, data-heavy applications
* Experience with GraphQL, gRPC, or real-time communication protocols (WebSockets)
* Exposure to AI/LLM application development
* Experience working in cross-functional squads
* Exposure to React Native or Python
* Familiarity with Marketing Tech, CRM-like systems, or workflow automation products
* Experience in LegalTech or Professional Services tech
* Knowledge of DevOps practices, Infrastructure as Code or cloud infrastructure (AWS or Azure)
* Experience mentoring engineers or influencing engineering culture
* Experience in early-stage or scale-up environments
