As a Bayesian Statistician at the Peter Doherty Institute, you'll play a crucial role in developing and applying cutting-edge statistical methods for early-phase clinical studies. You'll work directly with leading researchers to design and analyse volunteer infection studies to assess new treatments for a range of pathogens, including malaria. This role offers you the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research, publish in high-impact journals, and collaborate with a diverse team of experts in infectious diseases.
Your responsibilities will include:
3. Develop and Apply Bayesian Methods: Create and implement statistical approaches for designing and analysing early-phase clinical studies, including challenge human infection models.
4. Collaborate on Clinical Trials: Work closely with clinical collaborators to implement statistical methods for ongoing trials at the Doherty Institute.
5. Contribute to Research Output: Develop technical documentation, lead methodology publications, and present findings at national and international conferences.
* Support Team and Students: Contribute to teaching activities and provide support to PhD students and research assistants in the programme.
You may be a great fit if:
You are a skilled statistician with a PhD in statistics, applied mathematics, or a related field, possessing a developing research profile and the ability to implement novel statistical methods using various computing programs.
You may also:
6. Have completed a PhD in statistics, applied mathematics, computational biology, or a closely related field.
7. Demonstrate a developing research profile with publications and conference presentations.
8. Possess strong skills in statistical computing programs such as R, MATLAB, or Python.
9. Have excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
10. Show experience in or willingness to participate in postgraduate student supervision.
* Have experience in statistical modelling of biomedical data and Bayesian methods (desirable).

Your new team - Department of Infectious Diseases
Department of Infectious Diseases is a recently established department of the Melbourne Medical School, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences that is based at The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute). Research within the department encompasses infectious diseases including antimicrobial resistance and healthcare associated infections, malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, influenza, viral hepatitis, sexually-transmitted infections, skin pathogens and emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Our researchers come from diverse backgrounds, including discovery research and basic scientists, clinician researchers, epidemiologists, public health physicians and microbiologists..
