At the Shire of Carnarvon, we play a vital role in safeguarding the wellbeing of our community — from the river to the reef, through every food business, public event, and neighbourhood that calls 6701 home. As part of our Community Planning & Sustainability team, you will contribute to a healthy, safe, and thriving community. This is an opportunity to make a real impact through meaningful regulatory work, proactive community engagement, and hands-on environmental health programs that shape the future of the Gascoyne. This is more than compliance — it's connection, prevention, and public health leadership.
What You'll Do
As our Environmental Health Officer, you will: - Protect community health through inspections, investigations, sampling programs and surveillance activities. - Administer and enforce key legislation including the Food Act 2008, Health (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1911, and local laws. - Process applications relating to food businesses, public buildings, effluent disposal systems, events and stallholders. - Support the Shire's mosquito and pest management programs, including contractor coordination and monitoring. - Respond to environmental health complaints, undertaking investigations and recommending appropriate actions. - Maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and contribute to policy development and continuous improvement. - Promote community education and awareness on environmental health risks. - Work collaboratively across the Community Planning & Sustainability team to support shared objectives. You'll be part of a small, committed team that plays a pivotal role in ensuring our community remains healthy, sustainable, and informed.
About You
You'll bring: - Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Health (or related discipline) and eligibility for appointment as an EHO in WA. - Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulatory frameworks, and environmental health practices. - Experience in inspections, investigations, sampling, and compliance assessments. - Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with the community, businesses, contractors, and internal teams. - High-level organisation, time management, and digital literacy. - A commitment to workplace health and safety. - Alignment with our CARECHIP values — Courage, Authenticity, Respect, Excellence, Cohesion, Humility, Inclusion, Passion. Experience in regional or remote local government and knowledge of local environmental health challenges are highly regarded.
Why Join Us
