The island is serviced by a barge weekly and is accessible by air. Mornington Island is a first nations community, and the Lardil people are the traditional custodians for the land. The island is inhabited by the Lardil, the Yangkaal, the Kaiadilt people, the Gangalidda people, along with the many visitors and workers. Mornington Island is very much an intercultural community.
