About The Role
The Senior Data Engineer is a key role within EDO, responsible for designing and maintaining scalable, cloud‐based solutions on UNSW's enterprise data platform. By leveraging expertise in data modelling, engineering, and DevOps, the position ensures a reliable analytics service through efficient pipelines and optimized system performance.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Insight Analytics & Data, the role focuses on delivering actionable insights to stakeholders and has no direct reports.
Responsibilities
* Design and maintain scalable cloud‐based data solutions on the enterprise data platform to ensure a sustainable analytics service.
* Engineer high‐performance data pipelines and ingestion processes using Azure and Databricks to enable accurate visualization and insights.
* Implement reliable and cost‐effective data lake operations based on dimensional modelling principles and infrastructure management standards.
* Translate complex business requirements into technical architectures and functional methods for implementing and testing requirements.
* Guide internal and external developers through implementation to ensure dashboards and reports meet institutional quality and technical standards.
* Enforce data accuracy and privacy protocols by validating systems against institutional regulations and security policies.
* Optimize system performance by evaluating and deploying emerging technologies to improve data ingestion, storage, and processing efficiency.
Qualifications
* Obtained tertiary qualifications in IT or equivalent professional experience, supported by over 5 years of hands‐on expertise in data engineering with MS Azure and Databricks.
* Utilised a diverse range of synchronous and asynchronous integration patterns, including API, ELT, and ETL, to build robust data architectures in appropriate settings.
* Demonstrated proficiency in data modelling and database schema development using SQL, Python/PySpark, and Unity Catalog to design and implement Azure data services.
* Managed automated testing and deployment for data solutions and lakehouse changes by leveraging Azure DevOps and CI/CD tools.
* Applied in‐depth knowledge of higher education data frameworks and reporting requirements, including TEQSA, TCSI, and QILT, to ensure institutional compliance.
* Executed core data warehouse modelling principles, such as Kimball methodology and Slowly Changing Dimensions, to maintain industry best practices.
* Implemented complex security models and data governance controls to maintain strict privacy standards and system integrity across the enterprise.
