Hours of work:
This is a permanent part-time position where you will be required to work a minimum of 14 hours per week. The role may include any additional hours which are reasonably required, when necessary, to fulfil the requirements of the role. The shifts for this role are Monday & Thursday 2.30pm-6.30pm, and Friday 6.00am-Midday.
About us
The Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS) was established over 47 years ago in 1979 to provide temporary refuge and find new homes for abandoned, abused, stray and unwanted cats and dogs. As a Not-For Profit Charity, SCARS is governed by an volunteer, elected committee. SCARS has a staffing compliment and a large dedicated group of volunteers including Kennel and Cattery Teams, Facility Management, Administration Support, Foster Carers, SCARS Markets.
Purpose of Position:
* Assist in ensuring the animal-related operational activities of SCARS are conducted consistently, effectively, and efficiently to support SCARS' mission.
* To ensure SCARS dog kennels and veterinary surgery are maintained to an exceptionally high standard of cleanliness and hygiene.
* Support the veterinary team by preparing surgery areas for the next day, including setting up cages and restocking supplies etc
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
* Ability to maintain exceptionally high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in a veterinary surgery and animal kennell/refuge environment
* Good understanding of infection control and biosecurity procedures.
* Knowledge of and commitment to health and safety (H&S) standards, including correct use of cleaning equipment and chemicals.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
* Strong attention to detail to ensure all equipment, surfaces, and instruments are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
* Ability to communicate effectively with the vet nurse and wider team when needed.
* Reliable, punctual, and trustworthy (including responsibility for locking up the surgery).
Responsibilities:
* Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene throughout the veterinary surgery as well as dog kennels
* Clean and disinfect all surfaces, cages, equipment, shelving, and consultation areas
* Assist with instrument care, including soaking, scrubbing, and preparing surgical and dental equipment
* Ensure all cleaning equipment is safe, maintained, and compliant with health and safety standards
* Empty, clean, and disinfect bins, litter trays, and waste areas, ensuring correct disposal procedures are followed
* Support the veterinary team by preparing surgery areas for the next day, including setting up cages and restocking supplies
* Ensure all stock levels are replenished (e.g. swabs, cotton balls, cleaning solutions)
* Carry out end-of-day procedures, including turning off equipment, cleaning floors, and securing the building
* Undertake other duties as directed by the Refuge Manager

Key Selection Criteria, Skills & Experience:
* Physically capable of performing manual tasks including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
* Understanding of the importance of contamination control within an isolation and quarantine space
* Able to work independently with minimal supervision and manage time effectively.
* Demonstrates reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
* Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and attention to detail.
* Able to follow instructions, policies, procedures, and established cleaning protocols.
* Committed to following workplace health and safety guidelines.
* Demonstrated knowledge and experience in animal care and/or welfare.
* Good understanding of infection control and biosecurity procedures
* Positive and proactive attitude toward routine and physically demanding tasks
