Primary objective
Work in a multi-disciplinary team environment as part of Territory Pathology, contributing to the provision of an efficient, clinically
responsive, comprehensive diagnostic, analytical and advisory service for Territory Pathology Royal Darwin Hospital Facility clients.
Context statement
This recruitment process is particularly targeting staff with well-developed phlebotomy and pre-analytical pathology collection knowledge
and skillset. Possession of a Certificate III in Pathology Collection from a recognised Australian Institution, or equivalent, is highly desirable.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Follow defined blood collection service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services, and workplaces.
2. External to the laboratory (sample collection) and Internal to the laboratory (specimen processing and data registration, transport basic
testing, performance of preventative maintenance, quality control and loading of analysers).
3. Interpret pathology request forms to ensure appropriate specimens are safely collected for requested tests, understanding pre-
analytical variables that can affect accuracy of test results, to ensure clinical utility of the reported result.
4. Ability to clearly communicate specimen requirements to patients, medical and nursing staff.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A Certificate III in Pathology Collection, or Laboratory Techniques or other relevant qualification awarded by an Australian institution,
or equivalent; or relevant history of work experience in a field of technical work closely related to the duties of this position.
2. Demonstrated effective communication skills to facilitate liaison with patients, clinicians, and other professionals from a range of
backgrounds to advise of patient preparation and collection requirements for pathology tests.
3. Basic First Aid, in particular addressing fainting and seizures during or after specimen collection
4. Ability to work as an effective team member, with demonstrated organisational skills and an ability to prioritise a changing workload,
both as an individual and as part of a team.
5. Liaison with supervisor so work performance and workload can be monitored effectively, including the ability to manage conflict
situations.
6. Attributes to take personal responsibility for accurate completion of work in a timely manner, willingness, and reliability to participate
in a shift roster and emergency overtime roster as required.
7. Attention-to-detail and ability to confidentially deal with patient records.
8. Capability to seek advice, acknowledge errors and learn from them when required.
Desirable
1. Basic laboratory skills to complete simple testing and other basic duties
2. Relevant work history in pre-analytical area of specimen reception
3. Knowledge of basic human anatomy with specific understanding of blood collection sites and equipment used.
