The Role
We are seeking a visionary, compassionate, and systems‑focused senior medical leader to join our executive team as Chief Medical Officer (CMO).
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and leading a team of 9–10 direct reports, the CMO plays a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of medical services, clinical governance, patient safety, and medical workforce development. You will hold executive accountability for Pathology, Pharmacy, Clinical Ethics, Patient Safety & Clinical Excellence and the Medical Workforce Unit.
As part of a dynamic and supportive executive team, you will promote a strong culture of clinical excellence, cross‑disciplinary collaboration, trust, and innovation. You will help guide major initiatives and foster key partnerships with neighbouring health services.
Importantly, the CMO will also be a visible leader within the broader Victorian health landscape, engaging with system‑level issues, contributing to health network collaborations, and advocating for improvement for the broader network.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide strategic leadership across clinical governance, safety, risk, and quality systems
* Shape and implement the medical workforce strategy, including credentialing, workforce planning, and education
* Promote a culture of learning, psychological safety, equity, and continuous improvement across the medical workforce
* Oversee key operational portfolios including Pharmacy, Pathology, and Clinical Ethics
* Support clinical research partnerships and collaborate with the Clinical Director of Research
* Represent Austin Health in local and statewide networks to address system‑level challenges
* Be a champion of Austin Health’s values, culture, and public voice, helping tell our positive stories
About You
You are a highly respected senior medical practitioner and an authentic, values‑led leader with deep experience in complex health environments. You bring strong clinical credibility and understand the power of culture, collaboration, and innovation in delivering better outcomes for patients and the broader health system.
You will have:
* Registration (or eligibility) as a medical practitioner in Australia
* Fellowship with RACMA (desirable, not essential) or equivalent specialty college
* Executive‑level experience in shaping clinical governance and medical workforce leadership
* A track record of leading large‑scale service improvement or transformation
* Financial acumen and the ability to lead operational portfolios
* Outstanding communication, engagement, and system‑thinking skills
* A collaborative, respectful, and emotionally intelligent leadership style
* Experience working within a research‑active health service and/or supporting academic partnerships will be highly regarded.
