Our client is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic skilled Port Employee to work alongside a Queensland Government-owned port authority that manages and develops vital marine infrastructure across Far North Queensland. Based in Cairns, the organisation plays a key role in supporting trade, tourism, and regional growth-connecting northern Australia to domestic and global markets through safe, sustainable, and efficient port operations.
Your new role
In this hands‑on role, you'll be part of a flexible, multi‑skilled team supporting day‑to‑day port operations in Cairns. You'll undertake a wide range of operational and maintenance activities, including operating plant and equipment, maintaining critical infrastructure, and supporting marine and emergency response services. Safety, teamwork, and environmental responsibility are central to everything you do, with opportunities to build skills across diverse port operations. You'll also participate in after‑hours and emergency response rosters, playing a vital role in keeping port activities running safely, efficiently, and reliably.
What you'll need to succeed
Skills and Qualifications
This position involves supporting day‑to‑day port operations, including general duties around the port, assisting with vessel activities, operating equipment as required, and adhering to all safety and operational procedures.
* A strong commitment to workplace health, safety, and maritime safety, with the ability to follow procedures and promote a safe working environment
* Practical experience or the ability to operate and maintain plant, machinery, and equipment safely and efficiently
* Willingness to work as part of a flexible, multi‑skilled team, supporting a wide range of port operations and maintenance activities
* Good problem‑solving skills, with the ability to identify faults, assess issues, and take appropriate action or escalate when required
* Flexibility to participate in out‑of‑hours work, after‑hours rosters, and emergency response activities
* A proactive approach to learning and skills development, including gaining competencies across port assets and operations
* The ability to follow legislation, regulations, technical standards, and internal policies and procedures
* Strong communication skills to work effectively with team members, contractors, marine pilots, and other stakeholders
* A commitment to environmental responsibility, including identifying, minimising, and reporting environmental risks
* Reliability, professionalism, and pride in delivering work that supports the safe and efficient operation of critical port infrastructure
* Coxswain Grade 1or Masterclass Qualification
* Driver License
