Cloud support associate apprentice, support engineering (melbourne)

Melbourne
Amazon Web Services Australia
Posted: 17 June
The role

The Cloud Support Apprenticeship Program is for Australian Permanent residents who are passionate about technology and looking to start their career in the cloud.

Learning and earning within an apprenticeship means you can get both – a qualification and a career.

AWS Cloud Support Associates bridge the gaps between systems, software, and operations, and are not constrained by how "things are usually done." Over a million customers rely on AWS for building and running their applications and businesses. Support Engineers work on large‐scale system design and help in operational decision‐making.

The apprenticeship is an accelerated career development program for professionals who want to start or advance their technical skills. Training is broken into instructor‐led training (ILT) and on‐the‐job training (OJT). ILT is projected to start in September and consists of two days a week of virtual classroom training delivered by a vocational provider, resulting in a recognised Diploma. OJT is delivered in person with teams based across Sydney and involves three days a week at AWS.

If accepted, apprentices will receive formal IT training (two days a week) and paid on‐the‐job training (three days a week) over 18 months, leading to a Vocational Diploma in IT and an opportunity to join AWS as a permanent employee.

Key job responsibilities

  • Work with network, systems, and software engineers to create proactive engineering mechanisms that enable the team to manage the health of distributed Linux server fleets and the software stacks that run on them.
  • Deploy and monitor systems and automation to ensure that regional tooling operates optimally.
  • Use trends and metrics to identify opportunities for improvement within existing frameworks, tools, and processes to continuously improve systems.
  • Perform high‐quality systems deployment, operations, best‐practice application, optimisation, internal and external customer interactions, and produce appropriate technical documentation and reports.
  • Maintain responsibility for systems functionality, performance, and configuration issues.
  • Apply knowledge of Unix concepts and theory, and participate in systems deployment and support.
  • Contribute to the creation and improvement of all support documentation.
  • Operate with limited guidance from management and actively drive issues to resolution.

Basic Qualifications

  • Year 12 certificate or higher.
  • Interest in pursuing a career in technology.
  • Availability to start the program in the second half of the year and work or study for a period of 18 months.
  • Cannot have an existing vocational Diploma in the same field (e.g., IT).
  • Training Services NSW only considers the qualification achieved, not any specialisations or Unit of Competency studied in the Diploma.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Lower‐level vocational qualification in IT, such as a Certificate III or Certificate IV in IT.
  • Degree in IT or computer science from another country, provided it has not been recognised in Australia.
