Team & Role Context
The AER Human Resources team currently works in partnership with the ACCC People Branch to deliver people related functions and initiatives to the AER. The AER Human Resources team are currently developing the capabilities, frameworks, structures, systems, processes and resources required to deliver the people function as a standalone service.
The AER Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) services will include health, safety, wellbeing and injury management systems, policies and procedures (with a focus on psychosocial safety) to minimise hazards, incidents and accidents. The team will also establish, implement and deliver on wellbeing, diversity, inclusion and employee consultation on major change matters, to foster a culture where AER people are safe, healthy and thriving.
Reporting to the Director – Employee Experience and working in partnership with other key stakeholders, the Assistant Director – WHS, Inclusion and Wellbeing plays a key role in determining the experience that people have when working at the AER.
They will do this by contributing to develop and delivering the AER's workplace health and safety (WHS), inclusion, diversity and wellbeing frameworks and strategies and major change.
Responsibilities
* Lead a team of professionals providing proactive and reactive WHS and wellbeing support to the AER. This includes role‐modelling our leadership behaviours, supporting a professional and collaborative working environment, coaching, giving continuous feedback, resolving conflict and facilitating career development.
* Have an important role in ensuring the AER remains compliant with relevant WHS legislation.
* Manage and deliver health, safety, wellbeing and injury management systems, policies and procedures (with a focus on psychosocial safety) being developed, implemented and reviewed to minimise hazards, incidents and accidents.
* Develop and deliver, including delivering through others, systems and processes to support effective Injury Management and Workers Compensation.
* Develop and deliver systems, and processes to support employee consultation, participation and representation on WHS, wellbeing, diversity, inclusion and major change matters.
* Represent the agency and manage the relationship with relevant forums in relation to WHS including the Health and Safety Committee, and Peer Support Adviser network.
* Manage WHS procurement and contracts such as the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
* Ensure agency compliance with relevant legislation including the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 (SRC Act) and the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act).
* Provide advice and assist managers and employees in their WHS obligations and Injury Management responsibilities, including legislation, monitoring the work environment, hazard management and incident management.
* Develop partnerships with AER executive and other key stakeholders to understand our opportunities to develop and deliver better‐practice approaches to people issues.
About You
In order to succeed in the role, you will have:
* Demonstrated strategic, specialist understanding and application of WHS inclusion and wellbeing frameworks (legislation, regulations strategies, codes of practice, policies, guidance, systems and practices).
* Demonstrated experience leading a small team of WHS professionals in a fast‐paced and complex people‐centred organisation that is geographically dispersed.
* Demonstrated experience in researching, investigating and analysing workplace hazards (including psychosocial hazards) and data to identify, address/control, monitor, evaluate and report on complex WHS risks.
* Have or be working towards relevant tertiary qualifications in WHS, human resources, psychology and/or AHRI accreditation.

Salary
$127,908 - $141,555 (plus 15.4% superannuation). The salary rates incorporate the agency pay increases which take effective from 12 March 2026 under the ACCC Enterprise Agreement 2024-2027.
