A Federal Government Department is seeking an experienced
Infrastructure Engineer / Systems Administrator
to support the design, deployment, and ongoing operation of secure ICT infrastructure within a
high-assurance operational environment
.
This role is ideal for someone with a strong
Linux-first background
, deep infrastructure expertise, and a passion for automation, security, and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
* Plan, deploy, configure, and support infrastructure solutions across physical, virtual, network, and storage layers
* Ensure reliable and secure data ingest into internal government systems
* Provide technical guidance to vendors delivering professional services
* Design and implement
Infrastructure-as-Code
using
Ansible and Git/GitLab
* Support CI/CD pipelines for safe, auditable change
* Mentor team members in automation-first and secure operational practices
* Maintain high-quality documentation, diagrams, runbooks, and procedures
* Operate effectively in a
high-security, compliance-driven environment
Mandatory Skills & Experience
* Proven experience designing and supporting
Linux-first (Ubuntu)
ICT infrastructure
* Strong Windows Server administration experience (AD, ADFS, Certificate Services)
* Hands-on expertise with
Ansible
and
Git/GitLab
(IaC, CI/CD, version control)
* VMware vSphere / ESXi experience including lifecycle management and optimisation
* Networking experience with
Cisco firewalls and switches
(segmentation, policies, secure connectivity)
* Ability to deliver complex infrastructure solutions while addressing:
* Security and access controls
* Testing and failover considerations
* Monitoring, logging, and backup strategies
* System and lifecycle constraints
Highly Desirable
* Expert-level Linux administration (Ubuntu/RHEL), including SOE development
* Container technologies:
Docker/Podman
, Kubernetes or similar orchestration
* Security tooling: Nessus, Nmap, AppArmor, Linux firewalling, WSUS/SCCM, SIEM integration
* Monitoring and alerting solutions (Prometheus/Grafana, ELK, CheckMK, OSSEC)
* Experience with data ingest pipelines (e.g. Apache NiFi)
* Strong Bash and PowerShell scripting skills
* Prior experience working within
Federal Government or national security environments
, including compliance with security assessments and change management processes
Due to the nature of the role, the candidate must be an Australian citizen with an NV1 security clearance or has the ability to obtain it.
