Our client is a federal government organisation with offices throughout Australia. Due to growth, they are seeking EL1 Data Scientist to join their team in Richmond or Geelong.
* 12-month initial contract plus 12-month extension
* Hybrid with 3 days per week onsite
* Federal government role - Australian citizenship required
Key duties and responsibilities
* Overseeing, leading, managing, and taking responsibility for deliverables of data analysis, policy proposal briefs, and key stakeholder management as the assistant director
* Producing and communicating detailed technical, professional, and policy advice on complex problems to internal and external stakeholders
* Researching and implementing innovative techniques and interdisciplinary methods to solve business issues
* Designing statistical, mathematical, and various data science models to conduct analytical work that addresses business issues
* Collaborating across teams, building relationships within the division and other stakeholders, including Agency Policy Branch, Home and Living, Legal teams, Service Design, Office of CIO, etc.
* Communicating effectively verbally and in writing, and presenting the outcomes of work undertaken, tailored to context and stakeholders
To apply you will need the following skills and experience:
Essential Criteria
* Extensive data analytics/data science experience supporting government policy development, with some exposure to government processes (budget, legislation, policy development, briefs / documents)
* Very experienced with complex internal or external stakeholder engagement and management and demonstrated experience with leadership/team management
* Advanced R & Python programming skills including data manipulation, analysis and model development/deployment
* Proficient in SQL, accessing databases and data storage systems (e.g AWS S3)
* Experience with version control systems, i.e. git
* Strong understanding of advanced modelling techniques and how they fit in a policy landscape
Desirable criteria
* Proficient understanding of statistical modelling techniques such as Generalised Linear Modelling, or tabular machine learning techniques such as gradient boosting, and how they are used in application
* Extensive experience in applying technical skills to solve open-ended and evolving business problems
