Western Downs Regional Council is seeking an accomplished legal professional to join its executive leadership team as General Counsel, providing strategic legal advice, risk management, and governance oversight across one of Queensland's most progressive and future-focused regional councils.
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the General Counsel will play a pivotal role in advising on complex legal, corporate and policy matters that influence the Council's strategic direction and operational performance. This is an opportunity to guide an organisation delivering major infrastructure and community initiatives, underpinned by strong governance, sound commercial practices and a commitment to ethical decision-making.
Leading a capable and motivated Legal Services team, you will oversee the full spectrum of Council's legal affairs, from commercial and property law through to construction, contract management, dispute resolution, and compliance with government legislation. You will also ensure Council's governance frameworks remain robust, transparent and aligned with the evolving legislative environment. Your ability to translate complex legal principles into practical, outcome-focused advice will support informed decision-making across all levels of Council.
To be successful in this role, you will bring extensive experience in the delivery of legal services within a large, multifaceted organisation-ideally within or alongside local government. You are a confident and trusted advisor with the professional presence to engage across all levels of government, elected representatives, and the community. A strong leader with high emotional intelligence and political acumen, you foster calm, clarity and collaboration in challenging situations. Your background demonstrates sound judgement, a pragmatic approach to risk, and a genuine commitment to public value.
