The AIHW has offices in Canberra and Sydney, as well as staff working remotely across Australia. This role can be performed from any location in Australia, with expectations of travel to Canberra.

Key Duties

The AIHW is seeking experienced and inspiring leaders to fill a current vacancy in the Child Welfare Unit (CWU) of our Housing and Specialised Services Group (HSSG). HSSG develops, collects and analyses data to support reporting and policy decisions on the health and welfare of, and provision of services to, a range of Australians. This includes:

* Children placed for adoption and their families, and children and young people in contact with the child protection system.
* Young people experiencing the youth justice system.
* The health and welfare of people who are in prison.
* The experience of teachers through the Australian Teacher Workforce Dataset and other education projects.
* The use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and alcohol and other drug treatment services.
* People experiencing homelessness or needing assistance with housing.
* Current and ex-serving members of the Australian Defence Force.

CWU includes three small teams that manage end-to-end analysis of child welfare data with focuses on First Nations children and their families, person-centric analysis via data linkage, children's integration with state and territory run child protection systems, and the Safety of Children in out-of-home care.

CWU works closely with Commonwealth and state and territory governments as well as First Nations stakeholders to deliver a range of reporting products aimed at measuring outcomes relating to children.

CWU is responsible for data development projects to support the National Agreement on Closing the Gap reporting and both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and National Safe and Supported: National Framework to Protect Australia's Children (Safe and Supported) Action Plans.

Our data work has a direct impact on shining a light on the wellbeing of Australian children.

We are seeking an experienced leader to manage three teams (approx. 15 staff) within the Child Welfare Unit. The successful candidate will lead their teams to deliver on their existing work plans and work closely with government and First Nations stakeholders on developing community-led data collections and new measurement approaches to meet the demands of emerging priorities.

Responsibilities

* Engage across government and First Nations organisations to negotiate future work plans.
* Work directly with First Nations communities on community-led data initiatives.
* Chair the Children and Families Technical Advisory Group.
* Be an active member of Child Safety related committees.
* Be National Data Custodian of the Child Protection National Minimum Data Set.
* Oversee a comprehensive and varied work program of three teams (General reporting, First Nations reporting and Integration).
* Progress complex data sharing agreements to share child protection data with Commonwealth data linkage systems.
* Effectively manage a unit of approx. 15 staff (currently three direct reports).
