Royal North Shore Hospital is a principal tertiary referral hospital for Northern Sydney Local Health District providing a comprehensive range of complex services to patients from across NSW. It has a strong and proud history in education, research and provision of high quality clinical care. Royal North Shore Hospital provides specialty services including major trauma, severe burns, spinal cord injuries, neonatal intensive care, bone marrow transplantation, neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology alongside acute medical, surgical, mental health, paediatric, cancer and maternity services.
The campus is also home to The Kolling - a medical research institute jointly governed with the University of Sydney
**What you'll be doing**
The primary purpose of the Basic Physician Trainee (BPT) is to provide effective medical services to patients under supervision, while developing expertise in medical practice in a complex clinical environment in inpatient and outpatient areas in the public health organisations within the Network.
Basic Physician Training roles consist of rotations through medical departments, working under an appropriate level of supervision by consultants. Rotations have different levels of responsibility and team structures. BPTs will gain increasing clinical autonomy and accountability as team leaders throughout the course of the three-year training program, building on their skills and attributes with the goal of entering an Advanced Training program.
BPTs undertaking the care of medical patients should ensure that they operate within their own level of expertise within a cooperative clinical care model and to seek consultation with the treating physician when appropriate, in the following activities:
- Clinically assess patients, incorporating consultation/history taking, examination, and formulation of a differential diagnosis and management plans
- Discuss diagnoses and management plans with patients and their families or carers
- Document the progress of patients in multiple settings
- Prescribe medications tailored to patients' needs and conditions
- Transfer care of patients
- Choose, organise and interpret investigations
- Assess and manage acutely unwell patients
- Plan, prepare for, perform, and provide after care for important procedures
**Merit Selection**
NSW Health follows a merit-based recruitment and selection process as per Policy Directive PD2023_04 - Recruitment and Selection of Staff to the NSW Health Service.
- MBBS or equivalent, current general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- This role requires eligibility for or current registration as a Basic Physician Trainee with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and intent to obtain Fellowship of the RACP. What is your current RACP status?
- Qualifications and experience as outlined in the Essential Requirements for the role.
- Demonstrated recent relevant experience in clinical medicine and ability to work in a complex clinical environment.
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills in dealings with patients, team members and supervisors.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning, teaching, research, quality improvement and clinical leadership in medicine.
- Demonstrated teamwork, time management and problem-solving skills in a clinical setting within a multidisciplinary team.
**Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases**
To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy PD2024_015, this includes any amendments made from time to time.
