Apply your expertise in forensic chemistry to provide quality analytical chemistry services to support the needs of the NT Justice System.

The Northern Territory Police Force is a modern, professional organisation committed to effectively performing its duties through well-trained and competent staff, advanced technology, strong governance and efficient use of resources in a safe workplace. The NT Police focus on proactive policing to reduce crime and keeping Territorians and their property safe, secure and prepared for emergencies before they happen.

The Forensic Chemistry Unit, part of the Forensic Science Branch in Berrimah, plays a critical role in supporting criminal investigations. The Unit provides specialised analytical chemistry services, examining forensic evidence using techniques such as chromatography and spectroscopy to identify substances and deliver expert evidence for court proceedings.

Senior Forensic Examiner - Your key role will be to assist in the investigation of crime by analysing biological samples and liquids to determine alcohol concentration and the presence of drugs in accordance with legislative requirements. You will be responsible for the management of caseload, generation of reports and performing duties in other sections of the Forensic Chemistry Unit as required.

Principal Forensic Examiner - In addition to similar duties including those of a more complex nature, you will provide expert evidence in court in line with relevant legislative requirements. You will also ensure that National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) forensic accreditation standards are maintained and provide training to Forensic Science Branch staff, NT Police members, and external stakeholders.

To be successful you require a BSc majoring in chemistry or a relevant scientific field, experience in an accredited Forensic Chemistry laboratory with a thorough understanding of legislation and the ability to perform the duties of the role. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, the ability to maintain confidentiality and impartiality, and the ability to work autonomously are essential for both levels.

For Principal level appointment, demonstrated leadership, mentoring and staff supervision experience is essential. Demonstrated experience presenting results in court and post-grad qualifications in chemistry or a related field will be well received.

Applicants will be assessed against both levels and offers of employment will be made based on experience and qualifications.
