The team
The Litigation and Public Law team within ASIC's Corporate Legal Services group is responsible for advising on claims made against ASIC, as well as public law, governance and statutory compliance matters. The team works closely with senior stakeholders across ASIC and plays an important role in managing legal, reputational and operational risk.
The role
As a Lawyer – Litigation and Public Law, you will provide high‐quality legal advice across a broad range of public law and litigation matters relevant to ASIC's operations. You will work with a high degree of autonomy and engage collaboratively with internal stakeholders across the organisation.
Responsibilities
* Provide independent, sound and timely legal advice on litigation and public law matters affecting ASIC
* Assist with managing and responding to legal and other claims against ASIC, its members and staff, including claims in negligence, defamation, breach of statutory duty and Act of Grace matters
* Advise on public law and governance issues, including delegations, decision‐making, procedural fairness, conflicts of interest and official duties
* Prepare high‐quality legal advice, reports, briefings and internal documentation for a range of audiences
* Monitor legislative developments, regulatory reform and emerging legal risks relevant to ASIC
* Build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
* Mentor and support other lawyers within the team as required
* Model ASIC's values of Accountability, Professionalism and Teamwork
Qualifications
* Legal qualifications and eligibility to hold an Unrestricted Australian Legal Practising Certificate
* Approximately 2–5 years post‐admission experience, ideally in litigation, public law, governance or regulatory work
* Strong analytical and written and verbal communication skills
* The ability to work independently with limited supervision and take accountability for outcomes
* Sound organisational skills and the ability to manage a varied caseload
* Experience working with, or the ability to quickly develop knowledge of, the ASIC Act, Corporations Act, PGPA Act and related legislation (desirable)
