General Description:The Teacher of Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing ensures each student reaches their full potential by delivering engaging instruction in the student’s least restrictive environment (LRE). The teacher collaborates with general education staff by modeling strategies and best practices for working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Delivers instruction to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in their LRE; supports students in meeting goals.Develops and implements aligned lesson plans in appropriate modalities (total communication, ASL, aural/oral communication) in collaboration with colleagues.Uses student data to modify instruction as needed.Serves as the case manager for assigned students, ensuring IEPs are developed, implemented, and reviewed according to guidelines.Works closely with audiologists on classroom amplification needs, monitoring audiograms, and cochlear implant mappings.Maintains and monitors specialized equipment including hearing aids, batteries, and amplification devices.Participates in staff and departmental meetings, child study, eligibility, and reevaluation processes, maintaining accurate records.Communicates effectively with families regarding their child's progress and needs.Stays informed of research and new techniques in the field.Performs other related tasks as required.Qualifications:Bachelor’s Degree required.Professional license with endorsement in Special Education - Deaf and Hard of Hearing PreK-12.Comprehensive knowledge of manual, total communication, and oral/aural approaches for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.Training and proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).Experience working with students with cochlear implants.Knowledge of federal and state mandates related to educational services for students with hearing impairments.Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and families.Strong organizational skills.Valid Virginia driver’s license and willingness to use personal automobile.Bilingual/fluency in Spanish preferred.
