About the role The Associate Commissioner and Chief Legal Counsel (ACCLC) directly contribute to the delivery of the NDIS Commissioner's functions and commitment to safeguard the wellbeing and rights of NDIS participants, and to improve the quality of NDIS services. The ACCLC acts as a co-leader of the organisation along-side the Commissioner, providing strategic oversight across the Commission's core functions. This role is responsible for leading organisational direction and ensuring the Commission meets it's strategic and operational objectives. The responsibilities as ACCLC include managing all legal matters of the organisation, including providing high-level legal advice to the Commissioner and the executive leadership team. The Chief Legal Counsel also ensures compliance with statutory obligations, oversees litigation and disputes and manages risks associated with regulatory and governance activities. The role also leads the Internal Integrity Unit and drives accountability across the organisation. The Practice Quality Division, Legal and Assurance Branch, Internal Integrity Unit and Parliamentary Services team all report into the ACCLC. The ACCLC is a member of the Executive Management Group and contributes to the Commission's strategic planning and delivery of regulatory priorities. The role plays a key part in strengthening the Commission's capability to be a formidable regulator. The key duties of the position include Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Provide strategic direction for the NDIS Commission in a co-leadership capacity with the NDIS Commissioner. Communicating with influence, translating complex and technical concepts for diverse audiences and exercising excellent judgement in complex and sensitive environments, balancing risks and opportunities. Lead the Executive Management Group by ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and establishing accountability with a focus on outcomes for people with disability. Provide timely, expert authoritative, strategic legal advice and counsel to the NDIS Commissioner on critical legal and legislative issues, including strategic litigation initiatives. Applies strategic and expert knowledge of the legislation under which the NDIS Commissioner performs her functions and human rights law, particularly as it relates to people with disability Provides strategic direction and expertise in managing multidisciplinary teams to deliver functions related to the regulation of NDIS providers and workers, legal services, integrity, freedom of information, privacy and parliamentary services. Upholding the rights of NDIS participants through monitoring and enforcement of Behaviour Support legislative functions and Rules and ensuring the application of regulatory approaches that elevate quality standards and contemporary evidence-based clinical practice in the delivery of NDIS Supports. Provide oversight of the Parliamentary team to ensure interactions with the Minister's Office, Parliament and other agencies are managed effectively in a timely manner.
