About The Business Unit
Fines and Enforcement Services (FES) is a business unit within the Justice Services and Regulation group in the Department of Justice and Community Safety. FES is responsible for managing the end-to-end infringements system in Victoria and includes the Director, Fines Victoria and the Sheriff's Office of Victoria.
As a senior member of the FES Legal and Commercial team, the Principal Legal Adviser will lead in providing legal, commercial and strategic advice on a wide range of commercial, administrative and public law issues as well as litigation matters.
About The Role
The Principal Legal Adviser will work closely with teams across FES to support the resolution of complex legal issues. Working in a complex and busy environment, this position requires the ability to operate with sound judgment and significant commercial acumen while managing competing priorities. This hands‐on role provides the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to measures aimed at ensuring the Victorian fines system is effective and offers fair and equitable pathways for vulnerable Victorians.
Some Of Your Duties Will Include
* Provide specialised, solutions-based legal advice and counsel in relation to complex and sensitive contractual and administrative law matters to senior management and key internal and external stakeholders related to the FES portfolio.
* Manage and oversee all aspects of legal and commercial matters relating to designated contracts including preparing commercial and contractual terms and conditions for contracts, contract variations, subcontracts and other instruments and providing advice on contractual issues. This includes managing and briefing professional advisers and monitoring payments to contractors to ensure that expenditure does not exceed approved expenditure.
* Provide legal support in the development, tender and negotiation of contracts in accordance with policy and approved processes. This includes contract drafting, evaluating tender responses, formulating strategy, and negotiating commercial and legal terms.

About You
* Demonstrated experience in administrative law and/or litigation and dispute resolution, commercial law and relationship management.
* Ability to analyse complex legal issues, interpret legislation and develop accurate legal solutions.
* Ability to identify emerging legal and commercial risks and liabilities and to develop contingencies and recommendations.
