Position objectives
The Band 3 Certificate Gardener is an employee with considerable skills who works alone or in a team environment on specialised horticultural work within our community. The objective is to carry out the routine maintenance and improvements to parks, gardens, recreational areas, roadsides and Council property surrounds to assist in Council's maintenance programs.
Key responsibility areas
Undertake maintenance and improvements on the Shire's parks, gardens and recreational areas, roadsides and Council property surrounds ensuring safe working practices and the quality of work performed.
Undertake specific street tree planting and maintenance in accordance with directions.
Prepare the Shire's recreation grounds for specific events.
Make recommendations on plant replacement.
Record daily activity sheets as to work performed and defects/faults observed.
Estimate quantities and requisition materials as required.
Take charge of any equipment allocated to the work and carry out regular (minimum daily) checks of oil, fuel, coolants, tyres, belts, etc. - reporting problems.
React immediately to overcome problems observed in shire assets and infrastructure; either by undertaking maintenance of drainage systems (table drains, culverts and bridges), furniture (seats, tables, signs, fountains, monuments, fences) and removing obstructions to traffic or drainage (fallen limbs/trees or re-growth) if within the limits of personal skill, competence and training or by making an immediate report.
Perform, as directed, other duties that are within the limits of the incumbents' skill, competence and training.
Qualifications and experience
The Band 3 Certificate Gardener must have:-
A current Victorian Light Truck (minimum) Driver's Licence for vehicles not exceeding 4.5 tonnes GVM
A certificate of proficiency in Horticulture
Knowledge and skills gained through a minimum of four years on-the-job training commensurate with the requirements of the work outlined in this position description
A demonstrated understanding of:
Safety in the workplace
Manual handling techniques
Equipment care requirements
Road signing and safety
An awareness of methods and practices that can be employed to manage climate change.
Selection criteria
Demonstrated skills and experience in turf management, arboricultural practices, horticultural practices and plant identification.
Demonstrated skills in Parks and Gardens maintenance.
Relevant Qualifications and experience as specified above.
