The Embassy of Japan in Australia is seeking a well-organised, proactive and creative person to join the Cultural Section of the Embassy as an Assistant to Social Media and Cultural Affairs.
Major duties may include, but are not limited to:
* Managing official social media channels, including content strategy, copywriting, and multimedia (photo/video) editing as well as drafting posts.
* Monitoring digital engagement trends, engaging with media consultants, and reporting social media analysis to supervisors to inform future communication strategies.
* Leading the cultural program for school visits to the Embassy, as well as conducting outreach visits to schools within the ACT and surrounding areas.
* Liaising with schools, and educational organisations to foster engagement.
* Representing the Embassy at festivals, and cultural and educational exchange fairs.
* Updating and maintaining the Embassy’s official website to ensure timely delivery of information.
* Drafting speeches in English for diplomatic officials.
* Providing comprehensive administrative support and logistical assistance to diplomats in their daily work in Australia, as well as support for visiting Japanese delegations.
* Serving as first point of contact for information and cultural-related inquiries via phone, email and in-person.
* Undertaking any other duties as required by the Cultural Section to support daily operations.
Due to the nature of this role, this is a full-time, in-person in Canberra with standard working hours from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
Requirements for this position include:
* Must hold Australian citizenship, permanent residency, or a valid visa with unrestricted work rights.
* Possession of a bachelor’s degree (specialisation in digital and social media, or equivalent professional experience, is highly regarded).
* Exceptional written and verbal English skills with a proven ability to draft professional correspondence and speeches.
* Comprehensive IT proficiency, specifically Microsoft Office.
* Demonstrated experience using digital content creation tools and multimedia editing software. Strong organisational skills with the ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines under pressure.
* Willingness to work outside of standard business hours (including evenings and weekends) to support Embassy events and official functions when required.
* Demonstrated capacity to uphold and promote Embassy work ethics.
* Ability to work effectively in a team and maintain a friendly, safe working environment for all staff.
* Willingness to embrace new tasks and challenges as required.
It would also be advantageous if the applicant has:
* Experience managing governmental or corporate social media accounts to drive public awareness.
* Experience in DSLR photography.
* Proficiency with Canva and the Adobe Creative Suite (specifically Photoshop and Premiere Elements) for graphic design and video production.
* Knowledge of the Japanese language (JLPT N2 or above is an advantage but not essential).
* Experience or understanding of Japanese office culture and cross-cultural communication.
NOTES:
This is a full-time position commencing in May 2026.
Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience.
