About the Position
This role is part of a newly developed program aiming to reduce stigma and address barriers affecting young Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people's engagement with mental health care.
As a First Nations Family Peer Supporter, you will support families and carers of First Nations young people seeking help at our services. You will draw on your personal experience and cultural connection to engage directly with families, offer empathic listening, provide information and connection.
You will deliver culturally safe, non-clinical peer support that values lived experience and promotes engagement. This includes providing information, psychoeducation, and empathic listening using intentional peer support frameworks and Family Peer Work principles.
You will also advocate for family voices in service planning and delivery, offering flexible support via face-to-face, phone or video. Additionally, you will build relationships with families, communities and stakeholders by co-facilitating workshops, events and family-inclusive activities.
Your skills and experience as a First Nations Family Peer Supporter will contribute to service development, program evaluation, team collaboration, and accurate documentation while promoting a safe and inclusive workplace culture.
The following criteria must be met for consideration:
* Willingness to participate in a relevant course or training.
* Lived experience as a First Nations family member.
* A personal experience of supporting a child and/or young adult family member who has experienced mental ill health or substance use issues.
* Capacity to share own experiences in a meaningful way.
* Confidence and ability to approach families and work collaboratively with diverse individuals.
