Lead Data Scientist – SPAI
Join the Strategic Planning, Economics and Experience Branch at the Ministry of Health as a full-time, ongoing opportunity. This role is part of the Service Planning Analytics and Insights unit, working with local health districts, specialty networks, and other NSW Health entities.
About the Role
As Lead Data Scientist you will lead investigative analytics work, build structured statistical models and maintain data-engineering pipelines for enterprise solutions that support NSW Health's service planning and reform objectives. The work focuses on sophisticated data science initiatives for nationwide health service planning.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage a small team of data scientists, establishing algorithms to address business needs.
* Provide expert advice on data-modelling approaches, coordinate algorithm creation and manage model risk.
* Interpret model outputs, understand assumptions, and present findings to key stakeholders.
* Maintain collaborative relationships with Ministry stakeholders, biostatisticians, data analysts, health planners and researchers.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's or postgraduate degree in Data Science, Analytics, Actuarial Mathematics, or Statistics.
* Experience in health, linked or population health data analysis.
* Leadership experience in data science teams and development of algorithmic models.
* Proficiency in predictive modelling techniques (e.g., dynamic simulation, GLM, discriminant analysis).
* Strong coding skills in SQL, R and/or Python.
* Excellent written and verbal communication and stakeholder consultation.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary range: $149,739 to $173,174 (Crown Clerk grade *****). Includes superannuation, annual leave loading, and a 35-hour work week. Work location: 1 Reserve Road, St Leonards.
Employment Conditions
Full-time, state-based position. Requires Australian citizenship, permanent residence, New Zealand citizenship, or a visa that allows work in Australia.
