In this role you will have:

· Leadership role critical in advising on and assisting Transport for NSW and its agencies to identify, manage, and mitigate safety risks across all operations
· Sydney location
Reporting to the Executive Director Legal – Employment Safety and Liability, you will lead a team of internal and external lawyers and claims specialists in delivering advice on safety, liability and claims matters across Transport NSW, Sydney Trains, NSW Trains and other Transport agencies.
This role ensures that advice provided is clear, accurate, comprehensive, timely, and solution-focused, while identifying and addressing legal risks in the administration of operational, contractual, and legislative frameworks.
You will deliver complex, high-quality, timely, and solutions-focused legal services and independent advice within the Employment, Safety and Liability legal team.
You will provide expert legal advice on WHS legislation and Rail Safety National Law obligations, incident response, regulator investigations (including by SafeWork NSW and ONRSR), public liability and claims matters, and litigation arising from same, while playing a critical role in helping the organisation identify, manage, and mitigate safety risks.
The team you will oversee includes specialists advising on property damage claims and liability matters (including claims for compensation arising from injuries to members of the public on Transport property, and road incidents), ensuring Transport effectively manages risk and meets its legal and operational obligations.
In this role, you will also provide leadership and expert legal advice to the Secretary, Senior Executives, and Managers, including through a safety lens, and lead complex legal negotiations to manage and resolve legal matters.
You will work closely with legal service providers and external stakeholders to ensure legal services are delivered in a timely and cost-efficient manner.
You will establish and maintain effective relationships, open clear channels of communication, provide expert advice, and gather and exchange relevant information to resolve issues and deliver practical solutions.

About You
You are a senior legal professional, with expertise in safety law as well as public liability litigation.
You have exceptional stakeholder management skills, with experience working with government agencies on complex matters, and supporting through a legal lens the implementation of organisational strategies and objectives.
You bring a strong understanding of the broader operation of government and legislation, with the ability to quickly absorb and interpret diverse and complex technical information.
You use this capability to support effective problem-solving and informed decision-making, ensuring legal advice is well integrated with operational, policy, and strategic considerations.
Your ability to communicate clearly and influence calmly and effectively - especially with executive-level stakeholders - sets you apart.
You are a people leader who enjoys building capability in others.
You mentor and coach team members to deliver consistent, high‑value outcomes, and you know how to effectively manage and integrate internal and external legal resources to maximise quality, efficiency and value for money.
