We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and passionate Aboriginal Support Coordinator to join our Distress Support Program, across Greater Newcastle. This program is a community-based, non-clinical support service that provides immediate, compassionate assistance to adults experiencing situational, emotional, or psychological distress and connects them to longer term support.

The Aboriginal Support Coordinator will apply the concepts of social and emotional wellbeing, mental health, and healing to support First Nations participants.

This role will give you an opportunity to:

- Provide short-term supports to First Nations Peoples and their families and connecting them to culturally appropriate services and supports

- Expand your care coordination skills

We are looking for passionate individuals with a desire to make a difference. The successful candidates will have:

- Aboriginality: Social Futures considers that being Aboriginal is a genuine occupational qualification under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act of 1977 (NSW)

- An understanding of and commitment to the Aboriginal communities respecting traditional culture, values, and ways of doing business

- Tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience in mental health, psychology, social work, social science or social welfare, health promotion or similar

- At least 2 years’ experience in a community services setting.

- Experience providing person-centred support, assessment and case management with people in distress

- Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills, with the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with all people to ensure effective relationships.

- Demonstrated well-developed organisational, time management and administrative skills with the ability to plan, prioritise and meet deadlines.

- Demonstrated experience in maintaining professional boundaries while engaging in person-centred work.

Working with Children and a National Police Check are mandatory requirements for all staff.
