Primary objective
As an Aboriginal Health Practitioner, provide culturally and clinically safe advice and support in regard to service delivery of
Perinatal Mental Health Care across the Northern Territory.
Context statement
An Aboriginal Health Practitioner at this level will be involved in the planning and implementation of cultural care for Aboriginal
clients experiencing perinatal mental health issues. The applicant will be involved in the provision of perinatal mental health care
and culturally based education or advice to both staff and clients. They will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team in the
electronic-Perinatal and Infant Mental Health Service (e-PIMHS) in delivery of health services and health promotion across
communities in the NT.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide a culturally responsive service in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, with input into mental health
assessment and treatment plans for Aboriginal clients during the perinatal period.
1. Support and advise health staff on best practice in culturally appropriate service delivery.
2. Contribute to the development and delivery of education and training for primary and secondary health providers, including
engaging community members to strengthen community involvement in health service delivery.
1. Provide cultural support to other health professionals to build cultural competence and responsiveness and assist them to
navigate Aboriginal communities and customs.
1. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services, and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Current registration with AHPRA as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner.
1. As per the NTPS Aboriginal Health Practitioner 2022 – 2025 Enterprise Agreement, minimum qualification AQF Level 4 and/or
signed learning agreement demonstrating a commitment to achieve this.
1. Demonstrated local cultural knowledge, respect and safety across local communities and ensuring and maintaining appropriate
confidentiality.
4. Ability to follow through on well-established assessment and treatment processes in a culturally safe and respectful manner,
under the broader supervision of a senior practitioner.
1. Working knowledge of the community and health information systems used in the clinic setting including tele-health and patient
care systems, and/or a willingness to participate in training to learn information systems to enhance practice and patient
outcomes.
1. Demonstrated experience in use of effective communication skills; including the ability to manage conflict; and complex and
sensitive issues.

environment with experience and knowledge of health information systems used; in particular patient care systems; and data
collection.

confidentiality.
1. Ability to self-manage within a multi-disciplinary health team and provide mental health care services against national health
care standards in a culturally safe and respectful manner.
1. Experience in the use of the community and health information systems used in the clinic setting including tele-health and
