About you
As a State Inspector, you will lead the management of complex, high‐risk and high‐profile regulatory matters, playing a critical role in prevention initiatives and reinforcing SafeWork NSW's position as a credible, trusted and authoritative regulator. You will operate with a high level of autonomy, applying expert judgement across diverse industries and environments while managing scrutiny, risk and competing priorities.
You will bring deep regulatory expertise, sound professional judgement and the confidence to make defensible decisions in challenging and sensitive contexts. In addition to advanced technical capability, you will demonstrate:
* Expert investigative and analytical leadership, directing complex inspections, investigations and audits, assessing systemic and emerging risk, and making robust, evidence‐based regulatory decisions that withstand internal and external scrutiny.
* Authoritative and influential communication, clearly translating legislative and technical requirements into practical, outcome‐focused guidance for senior leaders, industry, workers and government stakeholders.
* Resilience, courage and professional judgement, leading responses to serious incidents, fatalities and high‐profile matters with composure, integrity and empathy.
* Strategic stakeholder engagement and influence, building trust and credibility with industry, unions and government partners to drive sustained compliance and improved safety outcomes.
* Strong integrity and accountability, consistently upholding regulatory standards, public sector values and ethical decision‐making in complex and high‐pressure environments.
* A collaborative and capability‐building leadership mindset, mentoring and supporting others, modelling best practice and contributing to continuous improvement across the regulatory function.
To be successful as a SafeWork NSW State Inspector, you must:
* Successfully complete all mandatory preemployment checks, including a medical assessment to confirm capacity to meet the physical and psychological requirements of the role.
* Hold and maintain a valid driver's licence along with a satisfactory driving record.
* Commit to complete the 12-month New Inspector Training Program (NITP) for the awarding of the Diploma in Government (Workplace Inspection), delivered by SafeWork NSW's Registered Training Organisation. This includes induction, classroom and online learning, assessments, and extensive field-based training with regular travel across the Sydney metropolitan area.
* Proceed to complete the Advanced Diploma of Government (Workplace Inspection) following the attainment of the Diploma in Government (Workplace Inspection).
* Meet all essential requirements detailed in the Role Description and comply with mandatory pre-employment screening in line with SafeWork NSW policies, procedures, and relevant legislation.
