Senior Embedded Software Engineer

The Opportunity

We seek a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to architect and develop embedded software applications, participating in the entire software development life cycle. The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge base of engineering principles, theories and techniques, and a passion for relevant new technologies. Responsibilities include:
* Taking responsibility for large and complex areas of the software architecture for multiple software systems.
* Ownership of software development schedule and reporting to project/customer stakeholders.
* Developing modular, readable and robust code for defence systems adhering to security and functional requirements in C++ 17.
* Participating in all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, systems engineering, agile development, review, testing, integration, and verification.
* Presenting design details during customer reviews to a mix of participants with and without software engineering knowledge.
* Collaborating effectively with both software and other engineering disciplines as well as management, to ensure comprehensive coverage of requirements as efficiently as possible.
* Mentoring less experienced software engineers and helping them develop good software development and debugging skills.
* Writing and maintaining both internal and deliverable documentation, either directly or through supervision of contractors.
* Providing engineering support to manufacturing as required.
* Participating in demo activities for the purpose of sharing knowledge.
* Maintaining a continuous improvement mindset.
Essential Requirements:
* Degree in Software, Electronics or Electrical Engineering or similar.
* Extensive experience in similar roles.
* Experience architecting complex software for embedded systems, adhering to requirements, with a structured verification approach.
* Experience in developing software for microcontrollers in C++ bare metal or with RTOS, working with interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, CAN etc.
* Ability to work independently or as part of a multi-disciplinary team, adhering to development processes.
* Excellent computer skills.
* Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
Desirable Requirements:
* Experience using the Xilinx Zynq SoCs.
* Experience in developing firmware in VHDL and/or Verilog for FPGAs.
* Experience in developing software to adhere to protocol standards.
* Experience in developing mission critical software.
* Ability to read and review schematics, identify issues with hardware designs from a software development viewpoint and make recommendations on HW designs.
* Experience developing custom peripheral interfaces on programmable logic.
* Experience with complex algorithm design on programmable logic with space constraints.
* Experience with Python or another scripting language for the purposes of emulation of hardware or software verification.
