Phd in nasal delivery for brain injury repair (gold coast)

Gold Coast
Griffith University
Posted: 13 June
Offer description

The Clem Jones Centre for Neurobiology and Stem Cell Research, within the Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics at Griffith University, is headed by Prof James St John. The Centre is a large multidisciplinary group of neuroscientists, cell biologists, molecular biologists, bioengineers and surgeons. We combine discovery and translational research to optimise and accelerate the delivery of therapeutic outcomes for people with severe disability. Our Centre engages extensively with the community to shape our research and to create solutions that have a clear path to market.

This opportunity will be primarily based at Gold Coast. As Griffith is a multi-site University, you may be required to work across other locations.

The NIISQ PhD scholarship is a prestigious scholarship supported by the National Injury Insurance Scheme Queensland and is part of a large program of research to develop treatment options for traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Responsibilities

* Develop novel trans‐nasal delivery methods such as peptides and micellar formulations for targeted delivery of therapeutic agents (drugs, extracellular vesicles, growth factors, and other small bioactive molecules) to repair traumatic brain injuries.
* Systematically explore the different carriers for trans‐nasal delivery of molecules and/or cell components.
* Characterise and optimise these carriers/vehicles from an application viewpoint.
* Test the efficiency of these approaches in rodent models of TBI.

Qualifications

* Scientific background in neuroscience and/or cell biology desirable.
* Evidence of a passion for basic and translational research, with a strong desire to undertake research in neural repair.
* Completed or expected to complete a bachelor's degree with honours equivalent to Second class (2A) honours or a master's degree with a significant research component comparable to a bachelor honours degree.
* Innovative, entrepreneurial attitude with a passion to deliver products to market.
* Focus on consumer involvement and ability to work with clinicians.
* Aptitude to work both autonomously and cooperatively within a large team.
* Drive and imagination to contribute to science.
* Domestic applicants, and international applicants who can obtain a student visa for study in Australia.

Benefits

The NIISQ scholarship provides an annual stipend of $50,000 for up to three years of full‐time study. The scholarship is part of the Cure Traumatic Brain Injury project, which aims to drive products into clinical trial within five years.
