What you'll do
The Head of Commercial - Play is a purpose driven leader that is accountable for horizontally leading the end to end Play business. This person is responsible for the 3 year ambition & strategic plan for BIG W that helps to achieve our Purpose of making a real difference for families through demonstrating real value, real solutions and real care.
This opportunity is a 9 month Fixed Term Contract.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead the largest portfolio in the BIG W business covering toys, books, AV, tech, gaming & sporting. We are on a significant growth journey with a vision to delight our customers with value innovation and on trend products. You are a transformational and strategic leader who can reimagine our categories for the future including range, merchandising, format and orchestrate product development through the delivery end to end.
With solid commercial acumen you are able to assess the financial impact of purchasing decisions, understand profit drivers, manage budgets, and use financial data to guide long-term buying strategies that contribute to profitability and minimize losses.
You have a passion for coaching and mentoring your team members with a vision of continuous improvement building the team of the future with clear development and succession plans in place. You will uplift the teams skills in strategic purchasing decisions, analyzing product performance, and collaborating cross-functionally to deliver commercial goals and profitability

What you'll bring
This is a senior role that calls for a visionary and empathetic leader who has strong interpersonal skills, with prior experience in guiding a successful, high-volume retail business of significant scale, ideally within the general merchandise or discount department sectors. Success requires a proven track record of shaping and growing a Commercial buying function (particularly national brands) within a multi-billion dollar environment. As well as this, you'll also demonstrate exceptional relationship-building skills for supplier negotiation, with a proven ability to forge strategic partnerships with national brands across different categories. Finally, you must excel at holistic, end-to-end strategic planning and execution, driving collaborative success across all commercial levers to achieve significant, sustained growth.
