Education and Teaching Support Officer

Full Time | Sydney, NSW | Fixed Term – approx. 6 months (to 31 December 2026) | 35 hours per week | Level 5/6 ($88k – $110k) plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading.

About The Role

The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) examines the natural environment, including life, from the core of the Earth to its upper atmosphere, deep in time through to the present and modelling towards the future. Research within BEES is clustered within four general thematic areas: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; Climate Science; Environmental Change, Sustainability and Resources; Paleoenvironments and Earth History.

The School of BEES has over 150 academic and professional staff, over 170 research students and 60 honours students. The Education and Teaching Support Officer role plays a key role in facilitating the efficient functioning of teaching and learning activities within the Climate Change Research Centre (CCRC) and the School of BEES, contributing to broader teaching and administrative functions across the School of BEES when required.

The role will work closely with the Teaching Support Team, Academic Program Authorities and Course Convenors to support the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate programs and courses.

The role of Education and Teaching Support Officer will be based at CCRC, one of the multi‐disciplinary research centres hosted by BEES. The CCRC houses research expertise in key areas of Earth's climate including atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial processes.

Responsibilities

Level 5 (Base Responsibilities):

* Provide comprehensive administrative support to Course Convenors and Honours Coordinators during the planning, delivery and evaluation of undergraduate and postgraduate coursework courses.
* Assist in organising supplementary examinations, ensuring timely communication with students and adherence to university policies.
* Collaborate with academic staff to create inclusive learning environments that accommodate diverse student needs.
* Work with Course Convenors to develop and implement equitable learning plans for students with disabilities, health conditions or other specific requirements.
* Ensure reasonable adjustments are made to assessments, teaching materials and classroom arrangements to promote equal access and participation.
* Manage the process of special consideration requests, including illness, personal hardship and extenuating circumstances.
* Liaise with academic staff to assess and grant appropriate extensions, alternative assessment arrangements or compassionate consideration.
* Exercise a strong understanding of the University's learning management system, Moodle, to automate routine administrative tasks in Moodle, including course setup, tracking student progress and providing technical support to staff and students.
* Work with academic information systems including ASTRA, ECOS and SIMS.
* Maintain accurate records relating to student assessments, supplementary exams and special consideration cases.
* Generate reports on student performance, trends and outcomes to support decision‐making and continuous improvement.
* Assist with the administration of field trips, including collection of fees and collation of participation forms.
* Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
* Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

Level 6 (Additional Responsibilities):

* Provide higher‐level oversight and management of processes relating to class management, academic information system updates and examinations.
* Independently manage and oversee workflows for large and complex courses and provide School‐wide teaching and administrative support during peak periods or as directed by the Head of School or delegate.
* Apply, interpret and provide authoritative guidance and advice on policies, systems, manuals, rules, procedures and guidelines relevant to Teaching Support activities across the School.
* Act as coordinator for complex processes requiring cooperation between the School and other administrative units.
* Deliver consistent, accurate and customer‐focused advice in response to a wide range of teaching and education‐related enquiries.
* Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by reviewing processes, procedures and protocols and implementing approved improvements.

Qualifications / Selection Criteria

Level 5 (Required):

* A relevant degree or equivalent tertiary qualification, with relevant administrative and customer service experience in a tertiary organisation (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience).
* Highly developed data management and organisational skills, with ability to manage complex tasks, prioritise competing deadlines and maintain high attention to detail.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to liaise effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
* Familiarity with HTML5, artificial intelligence (AI) or Large Language Models (LLM), is desirable.
* Demonstrated ability to analyse and resolve sensitive issues efficiently and effectively.
* Demonstrated ability to apply, interpret, advise on and contribute to development of policies, systems, procedures and guidelines.
* Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in an administrative environment.
* Experience providing administrative support for teaching activities and coordinating academic processes.
* Experience handling student enquiries; familiarity with UNSW policies relating to student conduct, support and enrolment is highly regarded.
* Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while taking initiative and responsibility for own work.
* High proficiency in Microsoft applications, familiarity with Moodle, and ability to learn, implement and promote new systems; experience using student management systems is highly regarded.
* An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
* Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

Level 6 (Additional):

* Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing productively as part of a team.
* Significant relevant experience in a similar role within a tertiary organisation.
* High‐level ability to draw on extensive experience to resolve complex and sensitive issues.
* Substantial experience providing broad teaching administration support and specialist advice to academic staff.
