Your new company
This State Government department plays a pivotal role in supporting the learning and development of Victorian families to equip people with the skills and knowledge required in the future.
Your new role
As a Senior Lawyer (at the VPS5 level), you will be responsible for providing strategic legal advice on a range of employment, discrimination, OH&S, migration and human rights law matters, in addition to providing legal support on contentious matters. Working closely with the Principal Lawyers and Managers, you will:
* provide high quality and timely legal advice on complex, high risk or sensitive matters;
* manage employment related litigation brought against the Department, including sensitive and high profile litigation in Commissions, Courts and Tribunals;
* brief external firms and at times, directly brief barristers, as required;
* represent the Department in mediations and conciliations;
* contribute to quasi-legal projects and reforms to improve Department practice in key areas of legal risk.
What you'll need to succeed
* You must be a holder of an Australian practising certificate;
* Have a minimum of 3-5 years' post-admission experience in the areas of employment, discrimination, OH&S and/or human rights law, with that experience being across both advisory and litigious matters;
* Previous experience within the public sector and administrative law will be highly regarded but is not essential;
* Strong written and verbal communication skills;
* Excellent stakeholder management skills and a customer focus;
* Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
What you'll get in return
This is an exciting opportunity for an Employment Lawyer to join a highly regarded and supportive legal team within the Victorian public sector. You will be given autonomy to manage a broad range of matters that will see you liaising directly with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, while also having the opportunity to mentor and supervise the work of more junior lawyers in the team.
