Wireless Signal Analysis and Protocol Decoding
Location: Adelaide, South Australia
$Generous salary on offer
Join a specialist engineering team working on advanced wireless analysis technology operating in complex real world environments. This role sits at the intersection of RF engineering, communications theory and software development, focused on extracting meaning from real over the air signals rather than simulated lab data.
You will analyse unknown wireless transmissions, reconstruct protocols and build robust decoding pipelines used to understand how modern wireless systems behave in practice.
The Role
You will investigate real world RF captures and determine how systems operate at the physical layer. This includes identifying modulation types, reconstructing packet structures and developing decoding algorithms for modern wireless technologies.
Responsibilities Signal Analysis and Reverse Engineering
* Analyse captured RF signals to identify modulation schemes such as OFDM, QPSK, QAM and FSK
* Decode MIMO physical layer waveforms across LTE, 5G NR, Wi Fi and related technologies
* Interpret FHSS, TDMA, OFDMA and SC FDMA frame structures including pilots, control channels and data channels
* Read and interpret technical standards and specifications including 3GPP and IEEE documentation
* Investigate protocol behaviour and anomalies from real world recordings
Algorithm Development
* Develop synchronisation, detection, demodulation and decoding algorithms
* Build PHY layer reconstruction and validation pipelines using real over the air data
* Implement performance optimisation across memory and compute constrained workflows
* Develop automated processing and simulation pipelines including CI CD
Testing and Validation
* Perform unit testing, system testing and performance benchmarking
* Validate decoding reliability in noisy and multipath environments
* Work closely with research teams to validate assumptions and findings
* Document methodology and engineering conclusions clearly
About You
You are comfortable working from incomplete information and enjoy figuring out how systems actually work rather than how they are supposed to work. You likely come from RF communications, DSP, telecommunications or signal analysis environments.
Required Experience
* Degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications or similar
* Around 5+ years working with RF communications and DSP
* Strong DSP fundamentals including filtering, correlation, frequency analysis and estimation
* Experience analysing digitally modulated signals such as OFDM, QPSK, QAM and FSK
* Understanding of multi antenna systems including spatial diversity and multiplexing
* Knowledge of wireless multiple access schemes and frame structures
* Experience with MATLAB or Python scientific stack
* Understanding of RF signal chains and performance metrics such as SNR, BER and EVM
* Experience using RF test equipment such as spectrum analysers and signal generators
* Ability to analyse signals in noisy real world conditions
* Embedded or real time signal processing
* Wireless security concepts
* Experience working with complex RF environments
* Machine learning applied to signal analysis
Relevant hobbyist or independent research experience is also valued where depth of understanding is demonstrated.
Why This Role
* Work on real signals rather than theoretical models
* Deep technical engineering challenges
* Highly specialised team environment
* Long term technical ownership and impact
* Adelaide based role with a strong research and engineering culture
