Primary objective
The Senior Territory Business Advisor leads team members and/or specialist sectors to stimulate and support business and economic
development in collaboration with stakeholders and other partners by providing information, assistance and referrals to government and
non-government services and programs. The role provides in-depth advice to government on the current status of the local business
environment to inform future policy direction.
Context statement
The Department of Trade, Business and Asian Relations is responsible for driving opportunities to grow private investment and create
jobs within the Northern Territory, supporting a strong, vibrant economy for all Territorians. The Business and Innovation division provides
strategic advice to government and delivers services to assist Territory businesses, including Aboriginal enterprises, to start, run, grow and
innovate.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Liaise with the business community, industry sectors, major project proponents and not-for-profit organisations throughout the
Northern Territory to understand business issues, provide access to improvement programs to assist the development of these
individual businesses; and provide high level advice to the Chief Executive and the Minister of Business, through the Regional Director
and Executive Director on issues facing the sector.
1. Collaborate across NT and Federal government, peak bodies, industry groups and non-government organisations to source and provide
accessible and responsive information on business support services and products including referrals to new and existing businesses.
1. Provide leadership in the development and implementation of business initiatives and business systems and processes; and mentor
other staff in the delivery of programs as required.
1. Collect and analyse business intelligence and identify and resolve issues that impede business success.
2. Prepare reports, presentations, events and other divisional requirements including ministerial documentation.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated ability to strategically lead, positively influence and motivate teams in the delivery Business and Workforce delivery,
business advice, programs, policy and other divisional requirements in a complex and changing environment.
2. Strong knowledge of contemporary business, commercial practices, governance principles and an appreciation of the challenges and
opportunities facing start-up and established businesses; with the ability to provide analysis and solutions to these issues.
3. Experience in client management, with high level written and oral communication and negotiation skills to suit a wide range of
audiences, including proven research, analysis, report writing and project management skills.
1. Ability to work as an effective team member and interact positively and effectively with people of diverse cultures.
2. Proven knowledge of computer software and an understanding of current business technology.
3. A current Northern Territory 'C' Class driver licence or equivalent with the ability to travel throughout the NT including remote travel.
Desirable
1. Degree in a relevant field of business or demonstrated work experience.
2. Knowledge of the NT economy and factors affecting economic performance and business and industry competitiveness.
