About the role:

This position is for an August 2026 commencement with contracts offered for a period of two years with possible extension. To be eligible for this position you must be PGY4+ by August 2026.

Applicants with experience working in Emergency Medicine, wishing to pursue Emergency Medical training are encouraged to apply.

The Canberra Hospital is a 600+ bed tertiary trauma and referral hospital providing services to the ACT and south eastern New South Wales region of Australia. It is the principal teaching hospital of the Australian National University (ANU) Graduate Medical Program. The Canberra Hospital Emergency Department is one of the busiest in the country:

• We see just under 110 000 presentations per year

• We have approximately 25% paediatric presentations.

• We have high acuity with admission rates of more than 35%.

• We have a significant trauma caseload.

Our new and expanded Emergency Department at The Canberra Hospital, consisting of a seven-bed resuscitation area, 36 acute beds, 18 short stay beds, a designated behavioural assessment unit (BAU) with four beds and two de-escalation suits. Fast track stream with a sub-wait and 20 treatment spaces and a dedicated paediatric area with 12 beds and a two consult rooms.

North Canberra Hospital in Bruce is a 256 bed public hospital providing acute and sub-acute services, with our Emergency Department receiving around 60 000 presentations per year supporting the ACT and South-Eastern New South Wales.

The departments are accredited for 36 months of training in emergency medicine with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, including accreditation for the paediatric requirement.

Alongside ED, rotations available for ACEM Trainees include: Anaesthetics, ICU, Acute Medicine, NICU, Paediatrics, Hospital in the Home, Retrieval Medicine, Sexual Health, Research and Medical Education.

We have a good working relationship with peripheral and regional hospitals, with opportunities to rotate to these areas to fulfill college requirements. Rotations can be arranged to other areas as required. There is a comprehensive training program for both the primary and fellowship curricula which all College trainees are able to attend. Specific support for exam preparation for both the primary and fellowship examinations is available. There is also the opportunity to engage in research activities for both personal interest and to fulfil College requirements.

Rotations will include:

* Emergency Medicine, Canberra Hospital, Garan ACT
* Emergency Medicine, North Canberra Hospital, Bruce ACT

Prior to commencement, the successful candidates will be required to:

• Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check

• Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy
