Overview

Volunteer Marine Rescue plays a critical role in keeping boaters safe on the water. As a Marine Radio Operator, you are the calm, steady voice on the other end of the radio coordinating responses, logging movements, and supporting rescue crews when it matters most. This is a vital operational role based at the radio base, supporting incidents across our marine search and rescue region.

Responsibilities

* Maintain a listening watch on VHF, HF and 27MHz marine distress frequencies.
* Control and operate multiple radios and communications systems.
* Manage GMDSS / DSC messaging.
* Log all vessel movements including LOG ON / LOG OFF.
* Maintain accurate radio communication logs.
* Activate and coordinate rescue boat crews in response to emergencies.
* Liaise with agencies including Water Police, Marine Safety, Ambulance and Fire Services.
* Assist skippers with Western Australian Marine Search and Rescue (WAMSAR) reporting.

* Clear communicator who remains calm under pressure.
* Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask.
* Basic numeracy and literacy skills.
* Sound knowledge of the local marine area (highly regarded).
* Interest in marine navigation and emergency response.

Time Required

Training is on Sundays 9am to 12 noon and Thursdays 7pm to 9pm. On some Sundays, training will be full days. Members are expected to attend scheduled training at least once a month, with a 33% minimum attendance to remain on the active crew roster. Active crew members will be required to respond to emergency call outs. You will be required to have a long-term commitment to the group as training of new active members can take 12 to 18 months.

Training

You will be required to participate in formal training sessions with written and practical assessment of learning. Attendance on some weekend training courses is required. All training provided at no cost to you.
