Exciting PhD Opportunity in AI & Environmental Chemistry
Are you passionate about chemistry, machine learning, and tackling real-world environmental challenges? Join our research group at Monash University and help shape the future of microplastic analysis through cutting-edge AI.

The Project
Microplastics are everywhere - and understanding their impact is critical. Our team has developed a pioneering neural network that outperforms human experts in classifying FTIR spectroscopic data for microplastic identification. Now, we're taking this work further: improving model interpretability, scaling for high-throughput environmental monitoring, and pushing the boundaries of AI-driven chemical analysis.
As a PhD candidate in this full-time, on-site role based in Clayton, Victoria, you'll be at the forefront of developing innovative AI methodologies that transform how we interpret complex chemical data. Your research will involve designing and implementing advanced machine learning models, analysing spectroscopic data, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams across chemistry, environmental science, and computer science. You'll contribute to high-impact research publications, present findings at international conferences, and help mentor junior researchers—all while working on technology that addresses one of our most pressing environmental challenges.
This position offers the unique opportunity to combine domain expertise in chemistry with state-of-the-art AI techniques, producing research that is both scientifically rigorous and environmentally meaningful.

Qualifications
Strong foundation in chemistry or physics with knowledge of chemical analysis techniques and processes.
Strong background in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Data Science, with the ability to develop and apply advanced algorithms.
Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB for data analysis and model implementation.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills for conducting high-quality research.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience in academic writing and the preparation of research publications.

Additional qualifications
Masters/Honours degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field is highly desirable.
Experience with AI applications in scientific research or chemical data is an advantage.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary research setting.
Interest in applying innovative computational approaches to address real-world challenges in chemistry and chemical analysis.
