About the Role
* Exciting and impactful Cyber role to uplift maturity
* Flexible and supportive working arrangements
* Community values centric organisation
Are you an expert in cyber security and maturity uplift? Join us in protecting vital services and building a resilient digital future…
As our Security Engineer, you will provide senior technical expertise to design and assure cyber security controls across Barwon Water’s digital environment. The role combines strong technical engineering capability with advisory responsibility, supporting secure outcomes across cloud, data, endpoint and security monitoring domains.
You'll engineer security outcomes by developing technical designs, control specifications, configuration standards and detection logic. During implementation, you’ll provide authoritative technical guidance, review changes, and validate that controls are implemented as intended and operating effectively.
Acting as a senior technical subject matter expert for cyber security platforms, you'll contribute to high-quality engineering that supports the organisation’s broader cyber strategy.
A key focus of the role is advancing our security monitoring and response capability, including the implementation and optimisation of Microsoft Sentinel. You’ll lead the development of detection systems and processes and play a hands-on role in testing regular cyber scenarios and exercises that strengthen preparedness, decision-making and organisational confidence.
You’ll drive the uplift of cyber maturity across the organisation by embedding and assuring Essential Eight controls, translating frameworks and regulatory requirements into practical, platform-level security outcomes. Working closely with Digital project and operational teams, you’ll balance strong security outcomes with practicality - helping Barwon Water stay secure, resilient and future ready.
About you
You are an experienced cyber security professional with strong technical engineering capability, particularly across Microsoft security and cloud environments. You are comfortable designing controls, specifying secure configurations, advising others on implementation, and validating effectiveness in environments where execution may sit with separate teams.
You’re comfortable making sound, defensible decisions in complex environments and can clearly articulate risk, control maturity and recommended actions to both technical teams and senior leaders. You understand how best-practice frameworks translate into real-world security and take pride in ensuring controls work in practice, not just on paper.
You exercise sound judgement in complex environments and can clearly articulate risk, control maturity and technical recommendations to both technical teams and senior leaders. You are comfortable influencing without direct authority and working within governance frameworks that support strong separation of duties.
As a natural collaborator, you build strong relationships, influence through expertise, and stay calm under pressure. Your qualifications in Cyber Security, IT or similar will be underpinned by your practical experience, just as your commitment to continuous improvement will see your career continue to develop.
